Learn tree pruning basics in Placer workshop Saturday
Because deciduous trees are dormant now, January is prime time for pruning. But before taking a saw or loppers to any tree, try taking a free workshop this Saturday, Jan.10, from the Placer County master gardeners. Your trees — a big investment in any garden — will be better for it.
“Winter Care and Pruning of Deciduous Trees” runs from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Loomis Library. No pre-registration is required.
“In this workshop you’ll learn care strategies for both ornamental and fruit/nut trees during the dormant season,” the master gardeners note. “Similarities and differences will be discussed, as well as how the timing and techniques of pruning trees affects their health, appearance and production.
“There will be a hands-on demonstration on pruning, including how to use our favorite pruning tools, and how to make cuts that have the least damaging effects on trees.”
The workshop coincides with the master gardeners’ Second Saturday Open Garden Day, which is from 10 a.m. to noon. Master gardeners will be working on site in their Loomis Demonstration Garden on the library’s grounds. They will be available for advice and questions during that time.
The Loomis Library is at 6050 Library Drive, Loomis, not far off Interstate 80; use the Horseshoe Bar Road exit.
