It’s a little cooler in the Sierra foothills than Sacramento, which means the bearded irises are still in bloom.

Old-fashioned blue flags are a garden favorite.

This weekend, the Sierra Foothills Iris Society hosts its annual show and sale at Prospector’s Nursery, 10003 Granholm Lane, Nevada City. Show and sale hours are 1 to 5 p.m., Saturday, May 4, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday, May 5. Admission is free.

Find many modern, ruffled and laced irises in a wide range of colors and forms. This year’s theme is “Imagine,” and will be illustrated with floral arrangements featuring irises. The public is invited to enter named irises in the competition from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the nursery. For more information on entering irises, contact Cindy at

In addition to the show, find a great selection of potted irises, perfect for Mother’s Day giving. Bearded irises are drought-tolerant and easy to grow. This event is the club’s largest fundraiser and supports its programs throughout the year.
