History for kids tour and garden primping party set for April 6

Two Saturday events at Sacramento’s Historic City Cemetery will make for a lively morning.

From 9 a.m. to noon April 6, all gardeners are welcome to lend a hand at the cemetery’s annual “Primping Party,” a prelude for next week’s Open Gardens celebration and tours. The primpers will weed and deadhead the cemetery’s world famous heritage rose garden and cemetery plots in anticipation of big crowds to come.

These volunteers need to be at least 18 years of age. Bring work gloves and hand tools, if desired. Wear sensible work shoes.

Meanwhile, kids of all ages are invited to the cemetery’s guided tour at 10 a.m. Saturday: “Sacramento History for Kids.”

“We’ve got tales of floods, fires, mayhem and the amazing accomplishments of the early residents of Sacramento,” say the tour organizers. “All of these stories are true and taken from the residents of the cemetery.”

The free tour is designed for students fourth grade and up, but the whole family will enjoy these tales from Sacramento’s colorful past. Meet at the cemetery’s main gate, 1000 Broadway, Sacramento. Parking is available on surrounding streets.
