Learn about California natives at free workshop

Fall is ideal for planting California natives, especially shrubs and perennials. But which ones? And where?

Learn from an expert during a free workshop Saturday, Nov. 1, at the Sacramento nursery of Green Acres Nursery & Supply.

At 10 a.m., Lesley Hamamoto, president of the Sacramento Valley Chapter of the California Native Plant Society, will discuss “Growing California Natives.” During her one-hour presentation, Hamamoto will cover some of the more familiar natives such as California lilacs as well as lesser known species that adapt well to home landscapes.

Irrigation – when as well as how much – is key to native garden success. Most California natives need wet winters but dry summers to thrive. They also need additional irrigation while getting established, putting down deep roots.

That’s why fall planting is so advantageous for natives; they benefit from winter rain.

Green Acres will also spotlight some of the native plants it stocks for local gardeners such as California fuchsia, red buckwheat and bentgrass. The nursery recently introduced a new fall collection of locally grown native plants.

“California native plants are a smart and stunning choice for your landscape,” says Green Acres garden gurus. “They thrive with less water, require minimal maintenance, and offer seasonal beauty while supporting pollinators and improving soil health. Visit one of our local nurseries to shop our new fall collection featuring locally grown plants perfectly adapted to our region and ready to bring biodiversity and resilience to your garden.”

Green Acres is located at 8501 Jackson Road, Sacramento. No reservation is necessary for Saturday’s workshop; admission and parking are free.
