Help pollinators at River District planting party

After recent rain, soil is soft and pliable – and (by the weekend) ready for planting.

Volunteers will take advantage of that opportunity Sunday, Nov. 23, while helping birds, bees and butterflies.

Dig into this effort during the River District Pollinator Garden Volunteer Day. From 9 a.m. to noon Sunday, volunteers coordinated by find out farms will plant hundreds of California perennials and sow seed for California annuals.

“Come help get California native plants growing to help pollinators in Sacramento!” say the organizers.

Participation is free, but registration is required to learn the address; bring gloves and tools, and wear sturdy shoes.

Sunday’s planting party caps off a continuing effort to plant pollinator-friendly natives in Sacramento’s River District. This effort is spearheaded by find out farms, a unique nursery in Sacramento’s South Oak Park neighborhood.

“Last week, we installed over 100 plants and spread over two pounds of California native seeds!” says Matthew Ampersand, founder of find out farms. “This weekend, we’ll be getting another location ready and installing so many more plants! We will also be sowing even more native wildflower seed mix. It should be sunny weather, and no previous skills are required! Join us, and I’ll teach you my favorite techniques for planting a new plant. It should be a fun time.”

Volunteers can learn a lot about native plants at this event. In addition, find out farms offers a wide selection of natives and wildflower seed mix at its South Oak Park nursery.

“We have over 130 varieties of California native plants in stock right now,” Ampersand says. “That’s a new record for us! We will continue to be open every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. until June. If that timing doesn’t work for you, please reach out, and we’ll get you set up with an appointment.”

The nursery is located at 4712 Parker Ave., Sacramento.
