Learn how to ‘prune like a pro’

Why is January pruning season? The better to see what needs to be pruned.

In winter, deciduous trees and shrubs drop their leaves and go dormant, their version of sleep mode. Without leaves, branches and canes are easier to see. So are dead wood and trouble spots.

And pruning while a plant is dormant causes less shock to the plant, which can concentrate its energy on healing any cuts instead of growing or sustaining foliage.

Learn all about pruning a wide range of plants during free workshops offered at Green Acres Nursery & Supply.

All seven locations will offer “Pruning 101: Prune Like a Pro” at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 17. The free workshop is part of Green Acres’ Garden Talk program.

“Learn when to prune with the right techniques from our pros,” say the hosts. “We’ll cover roses, fruit trees, perennials and more.”

Each session also will include a Q&A with Green Acres garden gurus.

No advance registration is necessary. Participating Green Acres nurseries are located in Auburn, Citrus Heights, Elk Grove, Folsom, Rocklin, Roseville and Sacramento.
