Time for a stroll in a winter native plants garden
Need a mental break from, well, everything? Contemplate the subtle colors and activity in a garden full of California native plants this weekend.
California Native Plant Society Ambassador Patricia Carpenter again opens her property near Davis to visitors Sunday, Jan. 25, for a seasonal Winter Ramble. Admission is free but registration is required.
The 1-are garden, west of Pierce Ranch Road south of Russell Boulevard, will be open rain or shine from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for self-guided tours; start any time during those hours.
Among the winter highlights:
— Winter growth, wildlife, birds, fungi and emerging wildflowers.
— Color, form and texture of the trees, flowers, berries, leaves and bark.
— Observe seasonal maintenance — pruning, cutting back, planting and pest control.
— Native seeds to be shared.
Botanist Glen Holstein will be present Sunday to help with plant ID and answer questions about native plants. He is a wildflower enthusiast.
An optional short orientation and Q&A gathering with Patricia will be held at noon and 2 p.m.
Miridae mobile plant nursery will be on site for sales.
Visitors are welcome to bring lunch or a snack to enjoy at the garden, and artists may bring their sketchbooks or cameras to record their impressions. No dogs are allowed in the garden.
Patricia advises wearing sturdy shoes. Maps will be available for use on site. Her non-native garden nearby also will be open for strolling.
