Get free seeds at Seed Swap Day

Want to save money while trying new flowers and vegetables? Then, this event is for you!

Saturday (Jan. 31) is National Seed Swap Day. With plenty of home-grown seeds to swap, the UC Master Gardeners of Placer County will host a giant community Seed Swap at Loomis Veterans Memorial Hall. The event is open free to the public; no seeds necessary – but they’re a big part of the fun.

From 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, learn about seeds while picking up some new ones. “Bring labeled seeds to share (in envelope, jar or sealed ziplocked bag) and take seeds others have brought to share,” instruct the hosts.

“Participate in National Seed Swap Day on the last Saturday in January!” say the master gardeners. “The seed swap is a fundamental part of human history. Seeds were one of the first commodities valued and traded. Today, modern gardeners collect and exchange seeds for many reasons ranging from cultivating rare, heirloom varieties to basic thrift. The exchange of seeds perpetuates biodiversity, too. It is an act of giving, and the ultimate form of recycling.”

All sorts of annual vegetables and flowers work well for this event. (They’re also the easiest to harvest seed for saving.) Herbs, perennials and other plant seeds will be available, too. Seeds will include commercially grown seeds as well as home grown.
Loomis Veterans Memorial Hall is located at 5945 Horseshoe Bar Road, Loomis.
