Student farmers host big plant sale
With all this early-spring warm weather, it’s time to grow – and start that summer garden. Here’s a chance to pick up lots of great plants at good prices – while supporting student farmers.
On Saturday, March 28, the Luther Burbank High School Urban Ag Academy will host its annual spring plant sale at its Burbank Urban Garden (BUG). The academy is located on campus at Luther Burbank High School in Sacramento.
From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., purchase summer vegetables, herbs and flowers, all raised by the students. Most of the annuals were started in early January just after winter break.
“Early Easter this year added a new challenge for us but the third-year Urban Ag Academy students really stepped up and everything is looking great!” the academy posted on Facebook.
A list of plants offered for sale is expected later this week on the academy’s Facebook page. Proceeds support the academy and its 1-acre garden.
Judging from their 2025 inventory, expect to find several varieties of tomatoes, squash, pumpkins, greens, peppers, melons, eggplant and heat-resistant lettuce as well as herbs, zinnias, cosmos, marigolds and other flowers.
In early 2025 Burbank’s Urban Ag Academy was threatened with shutdown by the school district. But a huge outpouring of support from students, alumni, staff, family members and the community persuaded officials to continue funding it as a full three-year academic program.
Luther Burbank High School is located at 3500 Florin Road, Sacramento. The BUG is at the back of the campus. Admission and parking are free.
