Learn about worms and what they can do for your garden

Red wigglers are some of the best critter buddies a gardener can have.

The worms (which are different than earthworms) can turn kitchen waste into garden gold: the richest compost your plants will ever enjoy.

This Saturday, May 2, the Elk Grove Community Garden and Learning Center will present a worm composting workshop from 10 a.m. to noon. The instructor is a UC Sacramento County master gardener and the Queen of the Worm Wranglers herself, Susan Muckey.

In “Worm Composting 101,” gardeners will learn how to set up a worm bin, care for their worms, and troubleshoot any problems that may occur.

How long until a worm bin pays off? An active, healthy worm bin can turn the contents into usable compost in four to six months, which means it can be harvested for fall planting. And then those wiggly pets can start over again for spring.

RVSPs for the workshop are requested at (916) 818-9108, though walk-ins are welcome. There is no fee for the workshop, but the EGCG appreciates donations of canned goods that will go to the local food bank.

The Elk Grove Community Garden is located at 10025 Hampton Oak Drive, Elk Grove. For more on the garden, go to https://elkgrovecommunitygarden.org/

Can’t make the workshop but curious about worm composting? The Sacramento master gardeners have some short videos on the subject that can be found here. Search for “worms” to find the specific videos.
