Got (big) squash? Try your luck at Rio Linda Zucchini Races

By now, you’re probably wondering about what to do with excess zucchini. Why not turn one of those squash into a race car?

This Saturday, Aug. 9, the Rio Linda Grange is hosting “Zucchini Races,” a fun-filled contest for folks of all ages.

In a variation of scouting’s Pinewood Derby, the zucchini squash get wheels attached and then tested for speed. The squash may be carved into more aerodynamic shapes or become part of something that already rolls (such as a toy car). No intact skateboards are allowed (although skateboard wheels are OK).

Starting at 9 a.m., this free event will be held at the Rio Linda Library, 6724 6th St., Rio Linda. In addition to the Zucchini Races, a craft fair (not all involving squash), car show, vendors and food trucks add to the festivities. The championship race is set for 12:30 p.m.

Two divisions for racers will be offered: Under age 18, and age 18 and older. The winner of each division will square off for the championship.

A “Make Your Own Racer” table will open at 9 a.m. with judging for best decorated at 10 a.m. Or bring your own squash ready to roll.

According to the rules, zucchini race cars are limited to 14 inches long, 12 inches tall and 12 inches wide. Exhibitors must race their own zucchini. Every race car must include at least one zucchini or summer squash.

Racers can try out the track from 9 to 10 a.m., but be advised: Your squash car may get squished.
