Get a grant to help your garden project
Does your garden group need seed money? Or do you know a school or community group that hopes to get a garden project off the ground?
Then this grant program may be just the helping hand needed to make that project grow.
The Sacramento Perennial Plant Cub is now accepting applications for its annual Saul Wiseman Grants, a unique program in honor of the club’s past president.
Application deadline is Jan. 16, 2026. (It may seem like a long time away, but start planning now!) Find the forms, past winners and full details at https://sacplants.org/grants/.
Funds will be awarded in February – just in time for spring planting and gardening activities, say the club members.
“The Saul Wiseman Grants Program promotes gardening and horticultural activities with an emphasis on education and service to our diverse community,” says the club. “Nonprofit groups, community groups and schools within the County of Sacramento and the City of West Sacramento are eligible to apply.”
Projects must have a source of water for irrigation. Applicants may request up to $1,200 – an increase over the former $1,000 limit. Smaller projects are encouraged; partial grants may be awarded.
And grant winners have to follow through. The club expects before-and-after photos as well as progress reports.
Past Wiseman Grant winners represent a diverse cross-section of our gardening community. The 2025 winners included:
* Bret Harte Elementary School – Pollinator Garden
* A.Warren McClaskey Adult Center – Tool Library
* Miwok Middle School – Middle Garden Renovation
* Mother Natives – Native Garden Installation at HI Sacramento Hostel
* New Joseph Bonnheim Community Charter School – Perennial Pollinator Project
* Oak Park Sol Community Garden – Hugelkultur
