Green Acres hosts huge rose show in (where else?) Roseville

October is the second best time for roses in the greater Sacramento area as warm days bring out a fall flush of blooms. (A little rain doesn’t hurt either.)

See for yourself at the 61st annual Sierra Foothills Rose Show set for 1 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at Green Acres Nursery & Supply in Roseville Admission is free.

The theme this year: “Peace in the Rose Garden.” There’s even a special category for rose varieties that include the word “Peace.” (Of course, the hybrid tea rose, ‘Peace,’ will be featured.)

“Don’t miss out on Roseville’s biggest rose show,” say the hosts. “Rose Society members will be showing off their prized rose varieties and entering them for the annual competition. You’re invited to see the winners, be inspired by the abundance of different rose varieties, and learn helpful tips from master rosarians.”

Got rose questions? Club members will be on hand to offer advice on any rose issue including what varieties to plant, how (and when) to prune, fertilization, irrigation, pest control and more. Educational displays will offer inspiration as well as basic instruction.

Got roses? Here’s your chance to win a blue ribbon.

“You, too, can be part of the festivities by entering your own rose for judging,” say the organizers. “Bring in your cut rose between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m., and the team of rosarians will assist you in preparing your entry.”

Requirements to enter: Rose must be home grown. The rose needs a stem at least 6 to 8 inches long with leaves attached. Ideally, flowers should be half to two-thirds open. Bring the rose in a container of water. (It will be transferred to a vase for judging.)
