Learn citrus-growing tips in free class Saturday
Citrus grows so well in our region, but the growing and care of the trees can flummox gardeners.
Citrus trees are on their own calendar, different from other orchard fruit. They’re also not deciduous, which confuses people about when to prune or fertilize them. But as a bonus, citrus make excellent landscape trees and are fire-resistant as well.
Understanding these trees is the focus of “Harvesting Sunshine: The Journey of Growing Citrus!” This class from the UC Master Gardeners of Placer County will be offered free this Saturday, Jan. 17, from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Lincoln Library. No pre-registration is required.
“Who doesn’t love citrus fruit?” say the master gardeners. “Here in Placer County we certainly do! Fifty percent of the households in Placer County have at least one citrus tree. Our conditions are especially conducive to growing this tasty crop.
“There are some horticulture tips to follow to ensure success. (This) presentation will cover the basics of citrus growing from planting to harvesting.”
The master gardeners will cover care for other types of fruit trees in two upcoming classes: 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, at Roseville’s Utility Exploration Center (registration required with the City of Roseville) and 2 p.m. Saturday, March 21, back at the Lincoln Library.
The Lincoln Library is at 485 Twelve Bridges Drive, Lincoln. For information on other Placer master gardener events, check the list here.
