The Secret Garden hosts annual Succulent Extravaganza

Memorial Day weekend often feels like a desert in Sacramento. What better time than to shop for un-thristy plants?

Over the three-day holiday weekend, May 23-25, The Secret Garden will host its annual Succulent Extravaganza. Find thousands of succulents on sale at the Elk Grove destination nursery, which boasts it has the largest such collection in Northern California.

“During the event, enjoy 15 percent off succulents, cacti and terracotta pottery, making it the ideal opportunity to add new plants to your collection or create a stunning arrangement for your home or garden,” say the Kahl family, The Secret Garden’s owners. “We bring in an expanded selection of succulents and cacti for this event, thoughtfully organized by sun exposure zones. This makes it easy to choose plants that will thrive in your specific space – whether you’re planting in full sun, part shade or full shade.”

On display will be several succulent plantings and table-top arrangements that illustrate which succulents grow well together. Contrary to popular belief, many succulents prefer dry shade to full sun. That’s where these living examples of sun exposure pairings come in very handy, especially for beginning succulent gardeners.

Staffing the event will be UC master gardeners, who will answer questions about succulent care as well as other gardening advice.

“Bring your succulent questions, plant problems, or photos of your garden – they’re a fantastic resource for gardeners of all experience levels,” say the hosts.

Bring the whole family, too; The Secret Garden is pet friendly and kid friendly. Aroma Bakery will offer coffee and cinnamon rolls from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Admission and parking are free.

The Secret Garden is located at 8450 W. Stockton Blvd., Elk Grove.
